Prior Park
Choosing this location in the picturesque city of Bath, England, for a Mother’s Day surprise from my son was perfect and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The weather was glorious and the beautiful landscape garden offered us a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It is a place you can reflect, relax, and calm your mind.
Sometimes, the simplest moments hold the deepest wisdom. Let your thoughts settle, and clarity will find you.
A Bit of History
Prior Park was originally created for Ralph Allen, a prominent Bath businessman, who rose from a humble background to become one of the wealthiest men in the country. He made his fortune by reorganising the postal system. He then went on to invest in the stone quarries at nearby Combe Down. He used the stone to build Prior Park wanting to create a place that would showcase the beauty of the natural landscape while also serving as a symbol of his wealth and status. The garden’s design reflects the ideals of the time, emphasizing harmony, balance, and the integration of architecture with nature.

Things To See
Palladian Bridge
This stunning Palladian Bridge, one of only four of its kind in the world. This elegant structure is a perfect example of Palladian architecture, characterised by its classical proportions and symmetry. The bridge spans the park’s tranquil lake and provides a picturesque spot for visitors to pause and take in their surroundings.
Panoramic Views
One of the most rewarding aspects of visiting Prior Park is the panoramic views it offers of the city of Bath and the surrounding countryside. The park is situated on a hillside, providing breathtakingly beautiful vistas that change with the seasons.
Tips for Visitors
- Opening Hours: Prior Park is open to the public year-round, with varying opening hours depending on the season. Check the National Trust website for the most current information before your visit.
- Admission: As a National Trust property, there is an admission fee for non-members. Members can enter for free.
- Accessibility: The park has some steep paths and uneven terrain, so comfortable footwear is recommended. The very steep paths makes this site generally unsuitable for wheelchairs and mobility vehicles.
- Facilities: There is a Tea Cabin near the lake serving hot and cold drinks, ice creams, sandwiches, cake and snacks. This can get quite busy so be prepared to queue if you want refreshments. There are a small number of tables and chairs available and picnic areas which are perfect for enjoying the afternoon sunshine.
- Parking: There is limited accessible parking on site. Generally visitors park on the roads outside the park or take a bus from the City centre.
Final Thoughts
A visit to Prior Park in Bath is a lovely way to spend an afternoon with family, friends or just being on your own taking in the views and embracing the tranquillity. A cream tea on the bank of the lake adds to the charm of this place. With beautiful architecture and stunning vistas, it is definitely worth a visit.
